The Sustainable Development Goals are a group of 17 targets set by the UN to outline how we can work towards a more sustainable future. What the Sustainable Development Goals subsequently gives us is a framework for creating positive impact in the world. It is a framework I believe we should be using to create sustainability, resilience and adaptability in our organisations. Part of my aim as a brand strategist is to help embed sustainability as a core element to good business.
Why support them?
We are at a point in time of drastic change which is why your brand at this time is important to consider. I am a firm believer that we can do business in a way that helps our planet, and our people thrive. All businesses can be sustainable, and the Goals help work towards that.
The Sustainable Development Goals provide a method we can use to create a better future by tackling the issues that stand in the way of it. By facing up to these challenges we create the environment for massive change. Firstly – change is the mother of invention, and secondly – invention breeds growth and opportunity. The Business and Sustainability Commission reports achieving the SDGs could unlock $12 trillion worth of opportunities and create 380 million jobs. Not a bad investment.
Here are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals provided by the UN.
How to enact the Goals?
As with so many things – enacting the Sustainable Development Goals will be a case by case basis. It may be a case of tackling them head on. For example, creating products and services that directly impact a target like – improving rural road connectivity. For most, it will be a case of working them into what you do. Paying a living wage, which not only effects Goal 1 – but has ripple effects in Goals 2, 3, 4, and 8.
There are other benefits too. Reducing material waste works toward Goal 12, but also helps reduce your material costs as a company.
Building good Brands
A good Brand has a good culture, helps its employees and community to thrive, and is fundamentally about people. Incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals lays the foundation to creating a Brand that has a people focussed culture.
